POST FLOOD PROGRESS REPORT

August 1, 2008

Things are progressing here at the Saddle and Leather Shop.  Some things we do know:

The wonderful building we all knew and loved is lost.  The structural unsoundness is too serious to attempt repair.

We were able to remove a lot of merchandise from the building immediately after the flood waters receded.  Thanks to many volunteers, we have cleaned, laundered, dry cleaned, power washed, soaked, disinfected, bleached, and oiled nearly every type of merchandise we carried.  Happily we can now say that much of the restoration has been successful and we are nearly ready to move to the next phase of recovery.

5401 J Street SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa will be our temporary location.  We are finalizing property use paperwork with the city now and will soon begin to clean and set up for a

HUGE FLOOD SALE!

Right now we are targeting mid-September for this to start, but stay tuned for the exact date.  If it can happen sooner it will!

Our long term plans, however, remain uncertain.  We are working with SCORE and the SBA to assess our situation.  We loved our shop and especially our customers, but we don't yet know if we will be able to continue the business.  The costs of flood recovery alone are staggering:

Estimates on demolishing the building on 16th Ave are around $20,000

Property taxes and other expenses continue to be due

Merchandise salvage expenses

Etc. etc. etc.

We thank you for your continued support and all the good wishes we have received since the flood.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you again in September.
